New Media Performances Pt II

Join us as we close out the 6th edition of the Every Woman Biennial with the second installment of our new media performance program. The evening brings together three distinct voices in contemporary performance art. Together, their works offer a sophisticated exploration of the interplay between the physical and digital, the personal and collective, and the rational and absurd.

  • 6:00–7:00 PM – Nina Sobell, Gamma Time (participatory)

  • 7:00–8:00 PM – Naz Karagöz, Mind Simulator

  • 8:00–9:00 PM – Nanae Itoi and Kanami Kusajima, Self Poppers

Nanae Itoi’s Self Poppers examines self-reflection through playful absurdity, using interactive technology to create a dynamic dialogue between the dancer’s movements and real-time visual and audio responses. Itoi, a Japanese mixed-media artist, merges traditional practices like sumi-e painting with cutting-edge technologies to explore impermanence and transformation.

Nina Sobell’sGammaTime in R Verse transforms brainwave activity into tangible art and sound, offering participants a unique opportunity to experience their inner states and shared connections through mixed reality. Sobell, a pioneer in integrating EEG technology into art, has spent decades investigating the boundaries of communication and consciousness.

Naz Karagöz’s Mind Simulator combines projection mapping, live sound processing, Turkish improvisational singing, and AI-generated videos to investigate themes of alienation, culture, and the mechanics of perception. Karagöz, a multidisciplinary artist, uses technology to create simulations that challenge perceptions of reality and identity.

Nanae Itoi
@nanae_itoi

Nanae Itoi is a Japanese mixed-media artist based in New York City. Her work fuses traditional practices such as sumi-e painting with contemporary technologies including projection mapping, motion capture, and interactive systems. Through this intersection of the tactile and the digital, she creates immersive installations and live performances that activate interactivity in the present moment—inviting audiences to sense, respond, and co-create. Itoi explores transformation, impermanence, and cycles of rebirth while posing fundamental questions about humanity, perception, and connection in a rapidly shifting world. She is the founder of Coiffeur + Art, a cross-disciplinary platform bringing together artists, musicians, dancers, and creative technologists through collaborative, community-based events.

Kanami Kusajima
@kanami_kusajima

is a dancer, choreographer, and performing artist originally from Japan. She has performed in works by various choreographers such as Francesca Harper, Ana Maria Lucaciu, and Yoshiko Chuma. Since 2020, she has also been performing as “Let Hair Down” in Washington Square Park, creating improvisational works that blend dance and live painting, to highlight genuine human connection, which is often overlooked in fast-paced modern society filled with electronic devices and social media. Her unique performance style has been presented at events such as Every Woman Biennial (2024), ChaShaMa Gala, and The Westhampton Beach Project.

Naz Karagöz
@duality.live

Naz is a multidisciplinary artist interested in creating simulations through sound, video, and performance. Her work investigates the mechanics of perception, thought, relation and reality, through incorporating technology as a tool of translation, delimit, and expansion that can be applied to different models of reality to transcend and transform.
